Extremely rare Grimsley pattern Texas Confederate Civil War horse saddle blanket made from Spanish moss. The South had severe shortages of all fabric and materials needed for the war effort. Wool was used for soldiers blankets and uniforms leaving nothing available for use as saddle blankets. It is well documented that The Confederate Government contracted with many suppliers for Spanish moss to make into saddle blankets. However even though thousands were made there are very few surviving examples. This particular blanket was in a museum for many years. We do have a copy of a period Civil War photograph of a Texas Confederate soldier on his horse using a exact blanket such as this one.
