Very Rare 34 Star Civil War Flag, / SOLD
Medallion Design with a Large Centered Haloed Star 34 Star American National Parade Flag displaying a wonderful medallion pattern that encompasses a large haloed center star. The color of the stripes are striking and complement the soft off white stripes allowing the bold blue canton to capture your immediate focus. This wreath pattern design flag of the Civil War era is rare and one of the most sought after flags today. This 34 star flag came into existence when Kansas entered the Union as the 34th state on January 29, 1861. Less than three months later, on April 12, Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate troops and the Civil War began. In Washington D.C., rumors were afloat that President Abraham Lincoln was to be kidnapped or assassinated. James H. Lane, a senator from Kansas, recruited 120 Kansas men who were in the city and organized them into Frontier Guard. For nearly three weeks they were billeted in the White House to protect the President. Parade flags were often used during political rallies; this particular flag appears to have had extensive use after observing the material loss on the hoist where the staff would have been attached. One could presume this 34 Star Flag 1861-1865 may have been used during the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Condition / Material: This flag is made of cotton and printed with some staining over the stripes. In addition it has some material loss along the hoist while overall exhibiting some wonderful characteristics one would expect to see from a flag of 153 years old.
